Experience the Southern Wine Route by bike

Over gently rising hills covered with vines, past picturesque castles, through shady forests and idyllic little towns - the Southern Wine Route offers the perfect mix of nature and culture. An ideal way to explore the region is by bike. If that's too leisurely for you, you can also get on a mountain bike or come up with a crazy outfit to ride in the annual Klapprad-Cup afterwards. In any case, every cycling enthusiast will find an activity to suit his or her taste on the Southern Wine Route.

German Wine Route Cycle Route

Explore the Palatinate by bike

The German Wine Route cycle path is just under 100 kilometres long, from Bockenheim to Schweigen-Rechtenbach at the German Wine Gate. For its entire length, the cycle path runs along the western edge of the Rhine plain and crosses the stream valleys of the Palatinate Forest, gentle wine country, lush orchards - a constant up and down with sometimes short but steep crests to overcome.

Cyclists will find relaxation and refreshment in the countless winegrowers' estates, where not only excellent wines but also regional delicacies of all levels are served. Those interested in history can make a stop at the numerous castles and palaces in the region, including Trifels Castle or Villa Ludwigshöhe Castle.

German-French bike tours

On the trail of orchards and brewery culture

Cycling in the PAMINA region: The cross-border cycle routes invite you to discover the scenic diversity and culinary delights of the PAMINA region Baden-Alsace-Palatinate. The tour along the meadow orchards, for example, leads past picturesque winegrowing villages, many fruit and vegetable farms, small distilleries and pretty farm shops. In spring, you pass lushly blossoming meadow orchards, in summer and autumn you can enjoy many regional products. On the circular tour on the theme of "Breweries and Beer Culture", you can discover all kinds of interesting facts about French and German brewing and beer culture, as it takes you past several breweries. You will also encounter varied landscapes, idyllic villages and towns worth seeing. The "Sweet Seduction" enjoyment bike tour takes you to the best ice cream parlours, confectioners, chocolatiers and pâtisseries in Baden, Alsace and the Palatinate. Along the "route du chocolat", the "chocolate route", you can look over the shoulders of the excellent chocolatiers and pâtissiers and enjoy the sweet delicacies. The confectionery museum in Gochsheim (Baden) offers guided tours with chocolate tasting. With a total length of around 380 kilometres, the tour offers varied cycling pleasure for up to seven days. The idea behind the "Wine and Terroir" enjoyment cycle tour is to connect the wine cycle paths in northern Baden and southern Palatinate as well as the northernmost wine-growing region in Alsace. Specifically, this is the section of the Baden Wine Cycle Route between Bühl, Karlsruhe and Bruchsal, the North Alsatian wine region around Cleebourg and the German Wine Route cycle route between the Palatinate towns of Schweigen-Rechtenbach and Bockenheim. The circular tour has a length of 325 kilometres and leads into the world of Alsatian, Baden and Palatinate wine growing.

Klapprad-Cup

In a costume and with a Klapprad on the Kalmit

Every year on the first Saturday in September, passionate folding bike riders get on their bikes and tackle the 673-metre-high Kalmit near Maikammer.

The rules: A quirky costume and a folding bike without gears, and off you go. Every year, the conclave decides on a humorous motto. Alfons V, front man of the movement, offers a foretaste of the Klapprad-Cup in this video.

Over hill and dale with the whole family

The Southern Wine Route can also be easily discovered by bike with children.

The 139-kilometre Kraut-und-Rüben (= Cabbage and Turnip) cycle path from Bockenheim to Schweigen is particularly child-friendly. It does not require any major climbs and is ideal for pleasure cyclists thanks to its numerous stops along the way. At the same time, cyclists on the Cabbage and Turnip Cycle Route become aware of why the Southern Wine Route is also known as "Germany's Garden of Eden": Tobacco, asparagus and strawberry fields alternate with gentle vineyards and the lush green of the Palatinate Forest.
