Riesling, our most cultivated grape variety, grows best on the easily heated sandstone weathered soils directly below the forest. This is followed by heavy clayey calcareous marl soils, ideal for grapes of the varieties Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, as well as Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. On the deep, strong loess-loam soils to the east of the wine route, mainly Silvaner, Morio -Muskat and Dornfelder are planted. On small specially selected plots we have planted - for the Palatinate rather rare grape varieties - Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the fungus-resistant new varieties Regent, Johanniter and Cabernet Blanc.
