Walddusche Gleisweiler

Gleisweiler

Description

The forest shower is in operation from the beginning of May until the end of October. Especially on very hot days, the 'cold shower' offers wonderful cooling. The forest shower in Gleisweiler is demonstrably the only facility of its kind still in existence in Germany. The water temperature ranges between 8 and 12 °C. On hot summer days there is a lot of activity due to brave "cold-showers". With bathing huts and benches all around, the romantic Hainbach Valley invites you to linger. In 1848, the physician Dr. Ludwig Schneider built the forest shower in the Hainbach Valley. He had already founded a cold-water sanatorium in Bad Gleisweiler. For the patients of his clinic the treatments "Douche", "Sturzbad" and "Wellenbad" were practiced in the Hainbachtal. Sometime the facility fell into oblivion. Only by chance was the water intake, hewn from red sandstone, rediscovered in the summer of 1990 and uncovered again over the years by volunteers.
