In the wonderful ambience of the centre of Birkweiler, we are transported back to Biedermeier Vienna by Schubert's German Dances for String Quintet. We then learn from Carl Nielsen's mischievous "Serenata in vano" (Serenade in vain) that serenades are not always welcome and that the musicians gathered for a nightly serenade sometimes have to retreat. Symphonic splendour, melodic richness and exuberant joy of playing are finally unleashed in Franz Schubert's Octet, which brings the evening to a powerful and joyful close.
