Description

Our small Wasgau community is located at the western end of the municipality of Bad Bergzabern and the district of Südliche Weinstraße, 300 meters off the highway 490, which leads from Vorderweidenthal via Schwanheim to Annweiler, and yet we live in the heart of Europe. Oberschlettenbach is nestled in a valley basin, about 230 meters above sea level, open to the Rödelstein and the Lindelbrunn castle ruins to the east and bordered by the Buchberg to the south, the Bühl to the west and the Heßlerberg, our local mountain, to the north. Two free-flowing wells testify to the abundance of water in the village; in some estates open springs still rise today, which are fed directly into the rainwater sewer. The fountain in the center of the village is adorned by a sign with the inscription:
"Whoever manages a pint a day will have a hundred years of manhood, only if he does not die earlier and thus spoil his fun".
Whether our water really has such healing powers, everyone should try for himself, it has not harmed anyone so far (despite the sign - no drinking water). Climatically, we are located in a favorable zone, not as warm and Mediterranean as on the Wine Route 15 km away, but also not as harsh as in the center of the Palatinate Forest. Grapes and figs also ripen here in protected locations. The area covers 458 hectares, of which 350 hectares are small private forests, a few hectares are fields, and a few hectares are meadows and pastures. The school, which was built in 1958, was closed in 1965. Our school-age children attend the elementary and secondary schools as well as the junior high school and the high school in Bad Bergzabern or the Trifelsgymnasium in Annweiler. In the kindergarten in Vorderweidenthal, the youngest children feel quite at home and make friends outside the village borders at an early age. The Lindelbrunnhalle was built in the years 1980 to 82 under the direction of the municipality by many volunteers in uncounted hours and is managed since its completion by the MGV (Männer Gesang Verein), in close cooperation with the municipality. The countless hikers who walk along the Lindelbrunn - Bärenbrunnerhof - Dahn hiking trail find rest and refreshment in the well-known Bühlhofschänke, where the home-grown Wutz is slaughtered every two weeks.
We are still in our infancy as far as tourism is concerned, but we have good chances for development due to our quiet and yet geographically favorable location. From here it is just a one hour walk to the castle ruins Lindelbrunn, Berwartstein, Drachenfels and the Altdahn castles as well as
10 km to the shoe metropolis and shoe museum Hauenstein,
14 km to the Trifels town of Annweiler and the spa town of Bad Bergzabern,
23 km to the Alsatian Wissembourg and
28 km to the garden city of Landau,
and within an hour's drive by car are Karlsruhe, Ludwigshafen, Mannheim and Strasbourg.
The cultural life is predominantly characterized by the men's singing club, founded in 1881, in which meanwhile also the women are welcome and may sing along. In addition, the carnival club "Die Scheuerborzler", the fire department association, the nursing association and the forestry association are also active. The "Jakob-Heinrich-German-Platz", located in the August-Becker-Straße, was named after the founder of the MGV. Since 1994 there has been a partnership between Oberschlettenbach and Geiswiller in Alsace, which contributes to international understanding. The administrative business for the municipality of Oberschlettenbach, which currently has 135 inhabitants, is carried out by the Bad Bergzabern association municipality.
