In the spring of 1890, Tchaikovsky sketched his opera "Queen of Spades" in just one and a half months during his stay in Florence. He had barely returned to Russia when he composed his string sextet "Souvenir de Florence" (Memory of Florence), still completely filled with this creative frenzy, whose highly dramatic opening seems like an echo of the tragic opera finale. However, the slow movement then transports us to a balmy moonlit night on the banks of the River Arno and the six instruments then compete in beautiful song. After the interval, we turn to two immortal film scores by the great Nino Rota ("The Godfather" and "Cinema Paradiso") and indulge once again in the Italian lifestyle with the bittersweet Intermezzo from the opera "Cavalleria rusticana" and the lively Tarantella by Rossini. Viva l'Italia!
