Burgruine Rietburg

Rhodt unter Rietburg

Description

The complex (located above Villa Ludwigshöhe) was probably built in the 12th century. The Knights of Riet are attested as early as 1149. In the 13th century, the castle became the property of the bishops of Speyer. Still spared in the Peasants' War, it was then destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. Due to securing and repair works since the end of the 19th century, the appearance of the castle has changed a lot. The keep and the mighty shield wall are still well preserved today. The main building was located where today the restaurant is attached to the shield wall. The modern terraces were built on the old foundation walls. From the lower lying outer castle the ring walls are still partly preserved. The Rietburg is the only castle in the Palatinate region that can be reached by chair lift: www.rietburgbahn-edenkoben.de.
