The Madonna in front of the edge of the Haardt Mountains dates from the 18th century and was created by the St. Martin stonemason Wendelin Fischer. She stands on a globe that is entwined with evil (the serpent in the Garden of Paradise). Through her "yes" to God, Mary gave birth to the Savior of the world. She thus opposed the serpent (evil) with the "Lamb of God" (Christ).
The text on the base of the Madonna was originally: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who take refuge in you".
Today's text: " O Mary, you saved us from bombs on February 20, 1945, pray for us!" On February 20, 1945, planes dropped bombs over St. Martin, which did not cause any damage in the village itself. Only one stray dud hit the Madonna. The fragments were reassembled and restored.
