Description

Here on the riding meadows in Billigheim there is a lot of activity on the 3rd Sunday in September - a southern Palatinate village out of control! Then the traditional Purzelfest takes place. The Billigheimer Purzelmarkt is the oldest folk festival in the Palatinate and has been celebrated for over 500 years. Already in the Middle Ages Billigheim was a place with economic importance, therefore the village received city rights in the 15th century and with it also the market freedom. On April 27, 1450, the "Dorff zu Büllikem" was granted the right by King Frederick III to hold a weekly market on Wednesdays and a 3-day fair on the Sunday before St. Gallus (October 16). The weekly market no longer exists today, but the "Gallusmarkt" can look back on a long history. Initially, the Gallusmarkt was celebrated together with the Kirchweih from Sunday to Tuesday. At the end, a market closing party was held on Tuesdays, which early on became a center of attraction for visitors from near and far. For the amusement of the people the strangest games and competitions were held, first of all of course the "Purzeln" which later gave the market the name "Purzelmarkt". But also disciplines like tree climbing, water carrying, rep cloth jumping, ring jumping and later in the 19th century also horse riding competitions were on the agenda. Even today, the Purzelmarkt is celebrated by locals as well as guests and traditions are preserved. Although the folk festival now takes place from Friday to Sunday in September and begins with the crowning of the new Purzelmarkt queen, it still ends with a large parade and the folk competitions on the festival Sunday.
