Description

Around 1800, Johann Peter Ullrich immigrates from Diedesfeld. His son Leonhard Ullrich will become the father of the two inventors Franz and Anton Ullrich. Leonhard Ullrich runs a farm trade, with colonial goods and textiles. In 1851, the eldest son Anton Ullrich (*1826) takes over the business from his father, who had already died in 1838. The Ullrich brothers had married two sisters and Anton Ullrich established his business in the property of his parents-in-law. The property on the corner of Habergasse and Hintergasse offered the necessary space.
However, the first few years of business were affected by an economic crisis and Anton Ullrich looked for a second source of income. A carpenter he had seen making an "Elle" gave him the idea of manufacturing folding scales. And so the first scale factory on German soil was founded.
At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855, Anton Ullrich had acquired a dividing machine for graduating yardsticks. Three years later he offered his brother Franz, who was four years younger, a share in the business. Further information is available on the guided tours of Maikammer.
