Every year on the first weekend of September, strange things start happening in the district town of Kusel. People who are usually respectable, irreproachable and serious fall into a state that seems at least questionable to outsiders. After five days, however, those in a questionable state then become respectable, irreproachable and serious once more. Such phenomena can only be seen during the second season in Kusel: it's the time of the fair.
Observers of the Kusel way of life will quickly notice that the locals divide the year into three seasons, with the middle one being the shortest. There is "Vor de Mess" ("before the fair"), "Noh de Mess'" ("after the fair") and in between there is "An de Mess'" or simply "Mess'" ("time of the fair"). It may just be a folk festival, but it is the biggest folk festival for miles around.
It was held for the first time in 1924.
Besides a few rides and a fair tent, there are also many stands along Trierer Straße, where various consumer goods are sold.
Every year on the first evening of the fair, the newly elected Kuseline (Kusel representative) is introduced.
