The figures and groups of figures not only stand for the historical origin of the festival (monk), but also for many things that belong to folk festivals. Among them, many a special feature of Dürkheim can be discovered.
The occasion for the Wurstmarkt was a pilgrimage to St Michael's Chapel, where each pilgrim gained an indulgence of 100 days. Since many pilgrims came, the appropriate food had to be provided. The winegrowers pulled to the chapel with wheelbarrows carrying a barrel of wine. There, the vehicle was turned around and served as a makeshift bar. For this reason, the wine tents of the festival are still called "Schubkarchstands".
