Historical review:

The Appenthaler Schützenverein was founded in the Thoms Inn in February 1964. Heinz Leidner (at that time forester of Elmstein) was elected 1st Chairman and Chief Rifleman Oswald Zoth 2nd Chairman. The Thoms Inn was chosen as the club's venue. Contributions towards expenses were fixed. An entrance fee of 5 Marks and a monthly membership fee of 2 Marks. The club wants to join the German Shooting Association. Three air rifle ranges were installed in the hall of the Thoms inn - later the inn "Zum alten Turm" (today also closed). On 1 March 1964, practice began. Since the number of participants was so enormous and proper operation could no longer be guaranteed, it was decided to build a shooting sports facility with its own house. Already at the founding meeting, the area at the "Sauwasen" east of Appenthal was mentioned.

The land of the "Sauwasen" was given to the shooting club by the municipality of Elmstein in 1964 in hereditary building rights. Trees were immediately felled and the site was developed. The trees felled at that time yielded 57 sterres of wood. The proceeds from the timber campaign were given to the shooting club by the municipality as start-up capital. At that time, 2 100m large calibre ranges, 5 50m small calibre ranges, 2 pistol ranges and 12 air rifle ranges were planned. From March 1965 until November 1965, work was carried out diligently and tirelessly at weekends. An early cold snap delayed the work, so that it was not until March 1966 that the roof truss could be put on. Although the facilities were not yet ready, there was neither electricity nor running hot/cold water, nor toilets, the first Christmas party was held in December 1966 in "our own house". After the winter break, work began in the spring of 1967 on laying the drinking water and sewage pipes, building the sanitary facilities, and installing the electricity supply. The electricity had to be generated by a generator powered by a diesel engine. In August 1967, the time had finally come. Friendly associations and the local population were invited to the inauguration ceremony. At that time the house with a guest room (120 seats), the sanitary facilities and 12 stands for 10m air rifle were completed. In 1989, the shooting range was extended by 5 small-calibre stands 50m and one large-calibre stand 100m. Archery has also been practised since 1986.
