The parish church stands at a former crossroads of two Roman roads. Around the year 700, the first small wooden pilgrimage church was built here, dedicated to the Franconian national saint Martinus. This gave way to a stone building around 1200, which probably had a cross vault and central nave. In 1488, the tower was added to the west of the church and in 1492 the choir was added to the east. The central building had three naves. The 14th century pews from this church have been preserved, a rarity of the highest value. They can be found in the gallery today.
