Dr Theodor Welsch (1842–1909) was a Protestant minister of the Neustadt parish of Haardt and fulfilled his dream of having an exotic garden here. The Mediterranean park, which is also called the "balcony of the Palatinate", is easy to reach from the wine village of Haardt. In 1909, he bequeathed his 12,000 m² terrace (Dr. Welsch Terrasse) located on Kübelweg to the town of Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Southern plants, exotic trees, a variety of different cacti and lush flowerbeds thrive here. From Dr. Welsch Terrasse you have a great view of Neustadt and, in good weather, you can see as far as the Odenwald. We recommend a walk from Neustadt's city centre via Dr. Welsch Terrasse and Leopold-Reitz-Weg, also called "Sonnenweg", to the Wolfsburg ruins.
