The castle ruins of Breitenstein are somewhat hidden in the Elmstein Valley and are located on a hillside north of the Speyerbach, opposite the Breitenstein forester's lodge of the same name. Little is known about the castle. Neither the date of construction nor the builders are known. It is generally assumed that the Empire, the Bishops of Speyer or the Counts of Leiningen were the founders of the castle.
