Description

Historic square of the town of Rodalben opposite the former "Galgenwiesen" at the entrance to the Lindersbach Valley with a cozy seating area and an old tunnel behind it. The former "poor sinners fountain" was rebuilt here. At this, those sentenced to death in the Middle Ages - partly for simple offenses such as theft from starvation - received a last "cool drink" before they were executed. An archway, newly built from old stones, with a kneeling figure below it, with bowed head accepting its sad fate, symbolically represents the entrance gate to the city. The sculpture was created by Rodalber artist Stephan Müller, whose studio is located at Pfarrstraße 20 (www.ateliermueller-rodalben.de). He brings such a wrongdoer into the spotlight, illustrates an inglorious piece of history and at the same time makes references to the present. The mighty stone block, from which the figure was finally created, comes from the former quarry at Hirschbrunnen between Rodalben and Münchweiler an der Rodalb and was broken out using drilled splitting wedges. The artist then worked on the stone with a flex and drill, or with a hammer and chisel for the subtleties. In his sense, the total work of art spans the arc from the past to the present. It denounces similar grievances that still exist in some parts of the world today and is to be seen as a memorial for the appreciation of law and justice.

The history of the square is explained in more detail in the tour "With the night watchman through Rodalben" by Anke Vogel (06331/62124 or 0152-21664944, www.g-ig.de).

Free parking is possible in the parking lot opposite (corner of Hauptstrasse and Pirmasenser Strasse) as well as on Lindersbachstrasse.
