Restaurants & Wine Taverns
From Regional Classics to New Creations
The Southern Wine Route is not only known for its Mediterranean climate and excellent wines, it also has a creative gastronomic scene to offer. In addition to the wide variety of restaurants, with dishes ranging from sweet to savoury and traditional to experimental, the numerous wine taverns and wine taverns offer the opportunity to sample Palatinate classics such as Saumagen or onion tart. While wine taverns are usually open all year round, ostrich taverns are only allowed to open for up to four months of the year - especially in autumn, of course. Historically, the term "Straußwirtschaft" goes back to a decree issued by Charlemagne in 791, in which winegrowers were supposedly authorised to operate "Kranz" taverns, which are identified by a hanging wreath of vines or ivy. Especially after a strenuous hiking tour on the Pälzer Keschdeweg or the Pfälzer Weinsteig, you can fortify yourself here with simple, hearty dishes.

Stop Off in the Palatinate Forest
Rustic huts invite you to stop off and linger: With its many huts, the Palatinate Forest is not only a unique hiking destination, but also a culinary one. Since the beginning of 2021, the Palatinate Forest hut culture has even been a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Site. In keeping with the typical convivial Palatinate way of life, the Palatinate huts offer rustic refreshment stops for hikers - for a suitable refreshment during a hiking break or as a destination after a successful hiking tour. At the huts, which are often run by volunteers, you can enjoy regional specialities such as Palatinate bratwurst, Saumagen, liver dumplings and sauerkraut, as well as steamed dumplings and homemade cakes. To go with it: Wine spritzer with Palatinate wine.
